Alex B. Cameron

ONALASKA — Alex B. Cameron, 84, of Onalaska died Saturday, March 15, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.

He was born Jan. 20, 1924, to Duncan and Mary Helen (O’Connell) Cameron.

Alex was a World War II veteran, deployed in the European Theatre. Upon his return from service, he attended Washington State College and earned his law degree from University of Wisconsin-Madison. He started a local law office on Caledonia Street in La Crosse in 1951, retiring in 1989. He was active in local politics, running for district attorney and municipal judge. Upon retirement, he moved to their vacation home in Stone Lake, Wis., where he continued offering his services to local individuals and causes.

Alex enjoyed his work and seemed to handle adversity with little more than a passing shrug. He always seemed to have a good lawyer story. He was unassuming and very willing to help others when they needed it. His humor and unique manners will be missed by those who knew him.

His is survived by his sister, Jean Deyo; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary (Higbee) Cameron; four brothers, Howard, Duncan, Jack and Bill; and a sister Mary Helen.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of Onalaska, 907 Sand Lake Road. Deacon Richard Sage will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, La Crosse. Friends may call at the funeral home today from 5 to 7 p.m. and again on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until time of services.

Mary H. (Schaefer) Bates

ONALASKA — Mary H. (Schaefer) Bates, 86, of Onalaska passed away Saturday March 15, 2008, at Onalaska Care Center.

She was born in Trempealeau County, Wis., on May 21, 1921, to Fred and Bessie Schaefer. She grew up on the Spangler family farm in the New Amsterdam, Wis., area. She graduated from Holmen (Wis.) High School. She married Richard C. Bates on July 19, 1941. They lived in the La Crosse area for many years. They moved to Iowa, Minnesota and Scofield, Wis., area before settling in Shawano, Wis., a place they called home for more than 20 years. They returned to Onalaska in 1995.

Mary was very devoted to the Presbyterian Church her entire life. She was a longtime member of the Ladies Aid and grew and tended the flowers for church. She loved to garden. Her flowers and vegetables were bountiful; she truly had a green thumb. She also loved to bowl and play cards.

Mary is survived by two sons, Dale (Barbara) Bates of Onalaska and Lyndon (Donna) Bates of Nashville, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Brian (Tamara) Bates of Appleton, Wis.; Kathy (Scott) DeFor of New Market, Minn., and Michael Bates of Nashville, Tenn.; five great-grandchildren; and her half brother, Dean (Nancy) Spangler of Holmen, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather; her brother, Roy; her husband, Richard, in 2000; and a grandson, Cameron, in 1992.

Memorial services will be held later this spring. Burial of the cremains will be in Green Mound Cemetery.

Memorials are requested to New Amsterdam Presbyterian Church.

Richard Ervin Beyer

Richard Ervin Beyer, 73, of La Crosse died Saturday, March 15, 2008, at Onalaska Care Center.

He was born Aug. 19, 1934, in La Crosse to John and Leona (Strittmater) Beyer. He married Gail Shirven on Aug. 8, 1954. He and his wife moved to Gastonia, N.C., and lived there while they explored the East Coast. They returned to La Crosse, and Dick went back to building and remodeling homes. Dick worked for Carpenters Local 1143 as a master-carpenter; he absolutely loved building. His favorite hobby was building and painting model cars. Dick also enjoyed watching Packers games.

He is survived by his wife, Gail, and three children, Debra (Dennis) Cox of Stoddard, Wis., Daniel (Sara) Beyer of Charlotte, N.C, and Rick (Rebecca) of Onalaska, Wis., five grandchildren, Daniel, Jaden, Isabelle, Gracie and Emerson; brother, Kenneth; and two sisters-in-law, Vi Beyer and Charlotte Shirven.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Deanna; his parents; and a brother, Alois.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Roncalli Newman Center, 1732 State St., La Crosse. The Rev. Mark Pierce will officiate, and entombment will be in St. Francis of Assisi Mausoleum at the Catholic Cemetery, La Crosse. Family and friends may call today from 5 to 7 p.m. at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 1425 Jackson St., La Crosse, and again at Newman Center on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until time of services.

Rose Marie ‘Rosie’ Haun

CASHTON, Wis. — Rose Marie “Rosie” Haun, 60, of Cashton went to be with our Lord on Sunday, March 16, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse after a courageous battle with Multiple Sclerosis.

Rosie was born April 16, 1947, to Laurence and Barbara (Bedward) Jones in town of Bloomington, Grant County, Wis. When her mother died just five months after her birth, she was brought to the home of Percy and Ruby (Atkinson) Jones. Percy and Ruby were, in every sense of the word, her mother and father. She was raised in Wauzeka, Wis., and graduated from Wauzeka High School. After graduation, she attended Richland County Teacher’s College in Richland Center, Wis. Then the love of her life entered into her life. Rosie was united in marriage to Jerry Haun on Jan. 14, 1967, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wauzeka. They moved to Cashton, where they lived for the past 41 years.

Rosie spent her life caring for others. Her greatest desire was to be a loving and supportive wife and mother, in which she was very successful. Once the children were in school, she worked with the elderly at Norseland Nursing Home in Westby as a Certified Nurse’s Assistant. She also worked as a Rescue Squad Volunteer in Cashton for many years. Later, she would work at Vernon Area Rehabilitation Center, helping disabled adults to learn life skills. Finally, she decided to work with children again at the Cashton School District. She helped students with learning disabilities to be successful in school. She was unable to continue to work after a long hospitalization and recuperation time, so instead she chose to volunteer her time working with the children at Sacred Heart Catholic School. Rosie was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church on St. Mary’s Ridge.

Rosie is survived by her loving husband of 41 years, Jerry Haun; her daughter, Terri (Greg) Zielke of Onalaska; two sons, Scott (Karyn) Haun of Plymouth, Wis., and Craig (Liane) Haun of Tomah, Wis.; seven grandchildren, Mitch and Dan Zielke of Onalaska, Chandler, Max and Gabe Haun of Plymouth, and Brooklynn and Annabelle Rose Haun of Tomah; her mother, Ruby Jones of Wauzeka; two sisters, Mary Carolina and Beverly Sheckel, both of Prairie du Chien, Wis.; two brothers, Loren (Jerri) Sawvell of North Carolina and Dale (Madeline) Bedward of Michigan; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her birth mother and father and adopted father.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Mary’s Ridge. Father Roger Scheckel will officiate. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Ridge Cemetery. Family

Gerald L. Welch

ONALASKA — Gerald L. Welch, 89, of Onalaska died Friday, March 14, 2008, at the Spring Brook Assisted Living Center of Onalaska.

He was born in La Crescent, Minn., on Oct. 29, 1918, to John W. and Anna Welch. He married Irene Eyler in La Crosse on Oct. 20, 1942, and she preceded him in death in 2002. Together with his wife Irene, they had owned and operated the Welch Motel in La Crosse for many years. Gerald was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons La Crescent lodge. He had also served in many capacities while a member of North Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by two daughters, Pamela (James) Hauser of Holmen, Karla Ann (Doug Brandt) Welch of La Crosse; one son, Tedd (Pamilla) Welch of Madison; five grandchildren, Chris, Mike (Michelle), Tom Welch, Steven (Amy), Andrew (Jaime) Hauser; seven great-grandchildren, Zachary, Isaac, Gracie, Katelyn, Jaelyn, Denver, and Camille. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at the North Presbyterian Church in La Crosse. Pastor Scott Skogan will officiate. Burial will be in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, La Crescent, Minn. Friends may call from 5 until 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse, where a Masonic service will be held at 6:30 p.m., and again from 10 a.m. until the time of services Wednesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family would like memorials directed to the North Presbyterian Church. Elizabeth ‘Betty’ J. Buroker

ONALASKA — Elizabeth Jule “Betty” Buroker, 79, of Onalaska died Thursday, March 13, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center after a brief illness.

She was born on Feb. 18, 1929, in Soldiers Grove, Wis., to Emma (Asperheim) Barlow. She married Cecil Buroker on May 30, 1948, in Soldiers Grove.

Betty was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and a wonderful homemaker. She enjoyed working on her puzzle books, and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and her dog, Dusty. Betty was also an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers and a big fan of her son Dave’s band, Phoenix.

She is survived by her husband, Cecil; her four children, Terry (Anita) Buroker of Fairfax, Va., Sharyn (Joe) Schreier of La Crosse, David (Sandy Keller) Buroker of La Crosse, and Marcia Buroker of Rushford, Minn.; and her six grandchildren, Josh, Kelly, Jenny, Eric, Shawn, Nicholas and Taylor. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home, 907 Sand Lake Road, Onalaska. The Rev. Scott Skogen will officiate. Burial will take place at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Forest Hill Cemetery, Soldiers Grove. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of service Tuesday at the funeral home.

Harold J. ‘Burt’ Cleary

ONALASKA — Harold J. “Burt” Cleary, 80, of Onalaska died Saturday, March 15, 2008, at Mulder Health Care Facility, West Salem. Memorial services will be announced by Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, West Salem.

Geraldine 'Geri' E. Millis

BLACK RIVER FALLS, Wis. — Geri Millis of Black River Falls passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at the Black River Memorial Hospital, Black River Falls, under the care of Black River Hospice. She was born on Nov. 9, 1917, to John and Zaida (Lynch) Fleming in Hinkley, Minn.

Geri was raised in Hinkley. Her family settled in St. Paul while attending high school. Geri graduated from Central High School in St. Paul, Minn. While growing up, Geri would spent her summers in Shamrock.

She was united in marriage to Richard “Bud” Millis and resided in Shamrock and later moved to Black River Falls. They were later divorced. In 1980, Geri moved to Venice, Fla., where she lived for 23 years before moving back to Black River Falls in 2003.

Geri was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. She was an avid golfer, bowler and enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge. Most of all she loved her family.

She is survived by her children, Richard “Bill” (Beverly) Millis of Black River Falls and Haines City, Fla., Betty (Dave Helminiak) Millis of Grantsburg, Wis., and Haines City, Fla., and Robert (Mary) Millis of Onalaska, Wis.; grandchildren, Michael (Tammy) Millis, Kathy (Jim) Powell, David (Dena) Millis, Carrie (Todd) Pearson, Steve (Sue) Millis, Dan (Cheryl) Millis, Paul (Tracy) Millis, Michael Gombold, Barbara Marchetti, Sandee (David) Hanna, Brad (Kim) Gombold, Mark (Gayle) Millis, and Lisa (Erik) Olson; 40 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her former husband, Richard “Bud” Millis; daughter, Barbara Jean Millis; one grandson, Richard “Ricky” Millis.

Harold Richard ‘Hal’ Kumbier

ONALASKA -- Harold Richard “Hal” Kumbier, 84, of Onalaska, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, March 13, 2008, following complications from heart surgery.

Hal was born Feb. 2, 1924, in Sheboygan Falls, Wis, to Anton G. and Emma (Zuleger) Kumbier. He was a 1942 graduate of Glenbeulah High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in the 10th Mountain Division in the Po Valley Campaign in Italy during WWII.

He attended Lakeland College and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, earning a master’s degree in guidance and counseling. He received his lifetime public school teaching license in 1956.

Hal taught high school in Baraboo and Port Edwards before becoming a counselor at Sheboygan Falls, Lakeshore Technical Institute and Western Wisconsin Technical Institute in La Crosse. He retired in 1985 from Western Wisconsin Technical Institute as the supervisor of admissions.

Hal was married to Helen Marie Hirsch from 1950-1971, and together they had five children. He married Mary (Johnson) Winter on Dec. 12, 1987, and welcomed three more daughters into his life.

Previous to building a home in Onalaska, they had lived in Rushford, Minn., Janesville and Beloit, Wis..

Hal was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and the Frontier-Badger 45 F&AM and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans. He was a past member of the Janesville Lions Club, Nekoosa Lions Club, Wisconsin Rapids Masonic Lodge, and the Barbershoppers singers. He was also past treasurer of the Wisconsin Personnel and Guidance Association.

Hal was instrumental in the building of the educational wing at the Methodist Church in Port Edwards and also helped create the Port Edwards Cemetery in 1958, where his son, Tim, was buried.

Hal was a man of many interests and talents. He enjoyed doing stained glass, fret work, leather work, building clocks, gardening and spending time in northern Wisconsin. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting, fishing, water skiing and the companionship of numerous golden retrievers. Hal’s father was an agent telegrapher (Morse code) for the railroad, which inspired his love of the railroad and model railroading.

Hal is survived by his wife, Mary; his children, Ted (Mary Gjermo) of Cambridge, Wis., Kay De Horn of New Hampshire, Tom (Andrea) of Onalaska, Terry (Wendy) of Pleasant Prairie, Wis., Tammi (Rich) Benson of Bangor, Laura (Bob) Gaustad of Houston, Minn., and Sara (Craig) Conley of Houston; 17 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his older brother, Lawrence L. (Dorothy) Kumbier; and a niece and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Timothy.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 16, at 2 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church in La Crosse. The Rev. Donald Iliff will officiate. Burial will be in the Mormon Coulee Memorial Park.

Friends may call at the church on Sunday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of services. A Masonic Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. The Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is in charge of arrangements.

Marie R. Williams

ONALASKA — Marie R. Williams, 93, passed away Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at Onalaska Care Center.

She was born in Prairie du Chein, Wis., on Sept. 7, 1914, to Charles and Mayme (Vavra) Polodna. On Jan. 7, 1950, Marie married James Williams and he preceded her in death Nov. 8, 1987. She was a lifelong resident of La Crosse and was an accomplished seamstress, doing alterations at many stores in La Crosse. Marie was a caring person who always helped those in need. During World War II, she ran a boarding house for soldiers on leave. She will always be remembered for her wonderful cooking and baking, and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Marie is survived by her children, Al (Lois) Locy of Lodi, Calif., Paul Williams of Coupeville, Wash., Richard (Sue) Williams of Kenosha, Wis., John (Kim) Williams of Onalaska, and Charles (Barb) Callan, Pat (Galen) Romskog, and Bernita (Howard) Sheehan, all of La Crosse; a daughter-in-law, Linda Williams; 38 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alvina Venneman of Miami and Helen Olson of Golden Valley, Minn.; and four sisters-in-law, Viv and Marita Polodna, Marie Preban and Lois Hayek.

In addition to her husband, James, Marie was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Bill and Butch Williams; one sister, Irne Flynn; and five brothers, Frank and Bill Preban, and Charles, Ed and Joe Polodna.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 14, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 1031 Main St., Onalaska. The Rev. Patrick Umberger and Deacon Frank Abnet will officiate, and entombment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Chapel of Devotion, La Crosse. Family and friends may call at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Patrick’s Catholic Parish or the Onalaska Care Center Auxiliary.

Nancy L. Nott

ONALASKA — Nancy L. Nott, 56, of Onalaska died Tuesday, March 11, 2008.

She was born in La Crosse on Aug. 10, 1951, to Edmond J. and Leona (Olson) Byrne. Nancy served in the U.S. Army from Feb. 10, 1970, to Jan. 31, 1973. She worked as a machinist for the Trane Company. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend, always being strong, giving and wanting to help.

She is survived by a daughter, Anne (fiancé, Scott) Nott of La Crosse; a son, Greg, of Onalaska; a sister, Joan Byrne, of Onalaska; two brothers, Larry (Paula) Byrne of Gaylord, Mich., and John Byrne of Onalaska; and a grandchild, Eli.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Kevin; and a sister, Mary.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 13, at 11 a.m. at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 401 Main St., Onalaska. The Rev. Scott Skogen will officiate. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until services. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested for the Gundersen Lutheran Hospice Program.

Warren A. Gillmore

VIROQUA/UNION GROVE, Wis. — Warren A. Gillmore, 85, of Viroqua and formerly of Union Grove passed away Thursday, March 6, 2008, at Bethel Nursing Home in Viroqua.

He was born July 31, 1922, in Bristol, Wis., to Benjamin and Addie (nee Devine) Gillmore. He graduated from Wilmot (Wis.) High School and from the Agricultural School Short Course in Madison after high school. He married Ruth Winfield on June 26, 1946. Warren and his wife farmed together with his brother Glenn in Kenosha (Wis.) County for several years. They rented another farm for three years in Kenosha County before buying their farm near Union Grove, where they raised their family and farmed for 40 years.

Warren and Ruth retired and moved to Cashton, living their dream, a house in the woods, for 13 years. In the fall of 2006 they moved to an apartment in Viroqua. He became a resident of Bethel Nursing Home in December 2007.

He was a member of the Washburn Masonic Lodge No. 0145. He also served on the Board of the Midland Co-op in Union Grove. It gave him great pleasure to make things out of wood for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Gillmore of Viroqua; sons, Donald Gillmore of Albuquerque, N.M., and Ben (Nancy) Gillmore of Holmen, Wis.; daughters, Susan (Aaron) Billings of Versailles, Ky., Peggy (Jerry) Dunnum of Coon Valley, Wis., and Kay (John) Peden of Allendale, Mich.; son-in-law, David Sr. (Maryann) Melby of Union Grove; 10 grandchildren, Jamie (Martha Priddy) Billings of Indianapolis, Ind., Teresa Billings of Versailles, Kelly (Julie) Dunnum of Westby, Wis., Jacob (Jen) Dunnum of Prairie Du Sac, Wis., Elizabeth (Kevin) Kraker of Allendale, Lynn Peden of Wyoming, Mich., Carrie (Dennis) Lieding of Libertyville, Ill., David Jr. (Toni) Melby of Westby, and Evan and Jared Gillmore of Holmen, Wis.; 11 great-grandchildren, Magan and Jessica Billings, Garrett and Anna Dunnum, Ally, Cora and Nick Dunnum, Jaden and Joshua Kraker and Derrick & Brett Lieding. He is further survived by a brother, Ernest (Marie) Gillmore of Paddock Lake, Wis.; sisters, Mildred Memler of West Columbia, S.C., and Nellie Graham of DeLand, Fla.; and a sister-in-law, Wilma Gillmore of Juneau, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Karen Melby; grandson, Arnold Warren Billings; brothers, Fred (Benjamin) Gillmore, Glenn (Edith) Gillmore and twin brothers at birth; brothers-in-law, Elmer Graham and John Memler; niece, Carol Bennett; and nephew, John Gillmore.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 15, at Wesley Chapel in Bristol, Wis., with the Revs. Tim O’Brien and Mary Lu Palmer officiating. Burial will follow at South Bristol Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet with the family on Friday, March 14, from 4 to 8 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. Masonic service, at Polnasek-Daniels Funeral Home, 908 11th Ave., Union Grove, and also Saturday, March 15, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.

Beryl Mae Cantu

LA CROSSE -- Beryl Mae Cantu, 87, of La Crosse died Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.

She was born May 5, 1920, in Morocco, Ind., to Sherman and Lillian Bertram. Beryl enjoyed sewing clothes, cooking meals and fishing.

She is survived by her husband, Dennis; three daughters, Jean (Charles) Ruprelt of Inverness, Fla., Mary (Anthony) Rutkowski of Onalaska, Wis., and Maureen (Mike) Vetromila of Morocco; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Gerry Bertram of Morocco.

Arleen N. Loging

WEST SALEM — Arleen N. Loging, 83, of West Salem passed away Thursday March 13, 2008, at Lakeview Health Care Center in West Salem.

She was born Oct. 18, 1924, in La Crosse to Arthur and Kathryn (Beyer) Nicolai. Arleen married Norbert H. Loging on Aug. 13, 1945, in La Crosse and he preceded her in death on May 13, 2006. Together, Arleen and Norbert farmed most of their life in the Barre Mills, Wis., area.

Arleen was a member of the Ladies Aid at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church. She enjoyed sewing and stitching, but most of all loved spending time with her grand and great-grandchildren. Arleen will always be remembered as a kind and loving person and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Arleen is survived by a daughter, Bonnie (Doug) Larson of Onalaska; three sons, David (Elizabeth) Loging and Gene (Rita) Loging, both of Barre Mills, and Keith (Karen) Loging of Caledonia, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Inez Lind of Illinios.

In addition to her husband, Norbert, Arleen was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Mildred Fennigkoh, Bernice Manske, Berdina Strupp and Edna Dummer; and five brothers, Harold, Merton, Arnold, Earl and Arvel Nicolai.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday March 17, at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 500 Park St., West Salem. The Rev. Joel Stuebs will officiate, and burial will be in Christ Lutheran Church Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 1425 Jackson St., La Crosse, on Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m., and again at the church on Monday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service.
