For the second year in a row, an Onalaska student has aced the ACT college entrance exam, scoring a perfect 36. In addition, Amy Yin, a junior, notched an almost-perfect score on the SAT, the other major college admissions examination.
Yin was recognized for her accomplishment by the Onalaska Board of Education Monday night and she didn’t have to go out of her way to accept the board’s kudos. She’s the student representative to the board of education.
The 16-year-old has a 4.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), runs in track, is active on the student council and other student activities and volunteers at the American Red Cross.
Yin said her parents would like her to go into medicine but she’s more interested in a business or finance major when she goes to college. “Maybe I’ll try a double major of business and medicine,” Yin said.
When she goes to college — and her test scores open many doors — she hopes to attend either Harvard or Stanford.
This year’s senior class at OHS is extraordinary academically, according to OHS Principal Pete Woerpel. “I don’t think we have ever had three National Merit Scholarship finalists,” Woerpel said.
The three seniors recognized for being merit scholarship finalists include Russell Buehler, Abigail Chilsen and Madeline Senger.
Two seniors earned the prestigious Wisconsin All-State Scholars Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship. They are Buehler and Laura Bartos, who are among 15 Wisconsin students selected. The scholarship is worth about $1,500 per year for four years.
Bartos also is a Herb Kohl Excellence Scholarship recipient, one of 100 in the state; Byron Stein is a Herb Kohl Initiative Scholarship recipient, one of just 87 chosen this year.
