Last week’s edition includes a story written by staff writer Michael Martin that requires comment and further information. The story is about John and Joan Dolbier and the work they have done to bring worthy historic designation to the Mindoro Cut.
I do not intend in any way to be critical of the Dolbiers, who have worked for years with local historical organizations and on project after project. Our community is better off for their efforts.
But I am concerned that the reporter wrote and the newspaper printed a story that is partial, at best.
The Mindoro Cut National Register of Historic Places nomination was written by two UW-La Crosse students, Leo Clark and Patrick Amlaw, under the supervision of Barbara Kooiman (Mississippi Valley Archaeological Center) and myself (UW-L History Department).
Leo and Patrick did the research and wrote the nomination, which is a substantial piece of scholarship. Barbara and Leo traveled to Green Bay to present the nomination before the state historic sites board. The Mindoro Cut would not have been placed on the Register without their work and the leadership of the university.
This information is public and readily available, but none of it appears in the article.
