Norman John Schein

GALESVILLE, Wis. — Norman John Schein, 83, of Galesville died Friday, May 2, 2008. He was born April 7, 1925, in Oshkosh, Wis., to Norman C. and Gertrude I. (Erban) Schein. As a World War II veteran, he was honored by the French government in 2004 and was inducted into the National Order of the Legion of Honor for his service in France.

After the war, he attended the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, receiving his bachelor’s degree and two master’s degrees. He began his teaching career at the high school level at a small school in Niagara, Wis. In 1961, he joined the faculty at UW La Crosse, where he enjoyed a 26-year career in the education department, teaching science methods courses. He was known for his creative and innovative teaching methods.

He was president of the Lake Marinuka Lake Rehabilitation program. He also served on the Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau school board. Norm was an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoor enthusiast.

He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Schein; and eight children, Jennifer Schein, Jeffrey Schein of Galesville, Theodore Schein of Anchorage, Alaska, Constance Schein (D. Leroy Sua and their children, Sydney and Graeme) of Holmen, Wis., Timothy Schein of Galesville and his children Tanya and Christina, Laura Johnsrud (Norman, and their children Sara, Darcy and Raymond) of Sturgeon Bay, Wis., David Schein (Jane, and their children Rebakkah and Matthew) of Onalaska, Wis., and Michael Schein (Teresa, of Galesville and their children Jonathan (Mary, and their son Tristan) and Richard (Rhonda). He is further survived by three sisters and one brother.

He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Rosemary Kuborn Schein.

Funeral services will be Sunday, May 4, at the Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 515 McHugh Road, Holmen. Visitation will be from 2 until 3 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. with Rev. D. Leroy Sua officiating.
