Published - Friday, May 09, 2008 Onalaska chief job draws 25 hopefuls The Onalaska Police and Fire Commission likely will select the city’s next police chief from 25 applicants who filed by Tuesday’s noon deadline, officials said. The city needs to replace Randy Williams, who left the department on medical leave May 31, 2007, and retired later in the year. The city named former Capt. Tim Hauser to temporarily lead the department until a new chief was hired. The Police and Fire Commission has been taking applications since January. The actual selection process, however, could be slowed a bit because the commission also needs to fill some vacant patrol positions at the same time, said Mary Anderson, commission chairwoman. In the coming weeks, the commission will decide which of the applicants will go in front of a select panel of law enforcement officials. That panel then will score the applicants so the commission can choose the finalists who will come in for a formal interview, Anderson said. The professional panel will be made up of Dave Collins, Wisconsin State Patrol superintendent; La Crosse County Sheriff Steve Helgeson; Onalaska Fire Chief Donald Dominick; Sparta Police Chief Mike Kass; and Eau Claire Police Chief Jerry Matysik. The new chief will be paid $66,973 to $78,815 a year.
