Support group formed for survivors of suicide

Whether a sibling, parent or other relative, friend or classmate, survivors of suicide can share experiences in a safe setting at a new Survivors of Suicide support group.

The group meets every third Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Room 141 at the Franciscan Spirituality Center, 920 Market St, La Crosse. The meetings are informal and there is no religious affiliation. The meetings are free and there are no attendance requirements.

There were 14 suicide deaths in 2007 in La Crosse County and three by the end of February 2008. According to the Wisconsin Interactive Statistics on Health, there were 639 suicides in 2007 in all of Wisconsin, more than double the number of homicides.

Public health officials say every 17 minutes, someone dies by his or her own hand. They also say 90 percent of all suicides have a diagnosable and treatable mental illness or substance abuse disorder. Therefore, many suicides are preventable.

Each suicide death is estimated to affect the lives of six other people, not including friends, co-workers and classmates.
