Golf outing to aid OHS football, WAFER
The Onalaska High School football program and the West Avenue Food Emergency Resource will benefit from Mutual of Omaha’s 2008 charity golf outing, to be held Monday May 12, at Cedar Creek Golf Course.
Cost is $100 per golfer, which includes the scramble with cart, social hour, prime rib dinner, awards and door prizes. Consider
Hole sponsorships are available for $250 to $1,000, and businesses also could support the event by donating door prizes.

Free airplane flights offered for area kids
Area youths ages 8-17 will have a chance to take to the skies on Saturday, May 10, as Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 307 hosts a Young Eagles Flight Rally starting from 10 a.m. to noon near the Civil Air Patrol hangar at the La Crosse Airport.
The Young Eagle flights are provided free of charge by local EAA pilots.
Pilots at the event will also explain more about their airplanes allowing young people to discover how airplanes work and how pilots ensure safety is the prime concern before every flight.
After the flight, each young person, will receive a certificate making him or her an official Young Eagle. Their name will then be entered into the “World’s Largest Logbook,” which is on permanent display at the EAA Air Adventure Museum in Oshkosh, Wis.
Additional Saturday dates for free rides at the La Crosse airport include June 14, July 12, Aug. 9, Sept. 13 and Oct. 11. Same time and place.

McGilvray bridges walking tour planned
A walking tour of the historic McGilvray Road bridges in the Van Loon Wildlife Area north of Holmen is planned for Sunday, May 18.
The tour will be conducted by Mariel Carlisle, and participants should meet at the McGilvray Bridges parking lot on Amsterdam Prairie Road at 1 p.m.

HCT plans auditions for ‘The Nerd’
The Holmen Community Theatre will stage Larry Shue’s popular comedy, “The Nerd,” this summer, and auditions are planned for May 27-28. Parts are available for four men, one boy (roughly 10 years old) and two women. Auditions start at 7 p.m. each night at Holmen High School, with possible call-backs on May 29. Potential actors are asked to bring a calendar with possible conflicts with the rehearsal schedule.
Area theater veteran Brad Williams will direct “The Nerd,” which follows the comedic results when a former soldier finally meets the man who saved his life, the man he has vowed to do anything for, and he turns out to be a hopeless nerd.

Bike rodeo set May 10 at Holmen Square
Area kids are invited to the Z93 Bike Rodeo from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at Holmen Square.
The free event will feature a bike safety road course, gifts for the kids and complimentary bicycle helmets for those who do not have a helmet of their own, courtesy of Altra Federal Credit Union, Features Sports Bar and Grill in Holmen, Gundersen Lutheran Express Care, and River Trail Cycles.
Holmen police officers and firefighters also will be on hand to meet with kids, and free bike safety checks will be offered.
Refuge offers woodcock dance outing
The public is invited to join Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge park ranger Ed Lagace for an evening tour to experience the dance of the woodcock.
The program will be held on the Prairie Island Dike in Winona, Minn., beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 10. This program is free but due to space limitations, registration is required.

Genealogy group plans cemetery session
The La Crosse Area Genealogical Society will meet Tuesday, May 27, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery, 1407 La Crosse St.
This will be a working session — taking digital photographs, verifying information from the stones and cleaning gravestones. Participants should bring a bag lunch, digital camera, clipboard for writing on and a kneeling pad.

Holmen Area Foundation plans annual golf event
Golfers interested in playing for a good cause are invited to participate in the eighth annual 18 Holes for Holmen golf outing planned for Wednesday, June 11, starting at 12:30 p.m. at Drugan’s Castle Mound Country Club north of Holmen.
The event is sponsored by the Holmen Area Foundation and the Holmen High School activities department, which will share the proceeds. Other major sponsors include Firefighters Credit Union and HSR Associates Inc.
The Holmen Area Foundation is a tax-exempt public charity primarily supporting education along with scientific, literary, recreational, artistic and civic efforts in the Holmen community.
The four-person scramble will feature a shotgun start, with hole prizes in addition to the $5,000 cash prize for a hole-in-one. A silent auction also is planned.
Cost per player is $60, of which $30 is tax deductible. Flyers with more information about the event are available at area businesses and at Holmen schools.

Fort McCoy fish contest runs to Sept. 1
Pine View Recreation Area Campground at Fort McCoy will host its annual fishing contest through Sept. 1.
The contest is open to the public. All fish must be caught in Fort McCoy waters, registered at the campgrounds office, building 8053, within 24 hours and can't be frozen.
Anglers must follow all applicable Fort McCoy and state regulations and possess state of Wisconsin and Fort McCoy fishing licenses/permits. Personnel can purchase all of these items at the Pine View Campgrounds office.
Participants in the Fort McCoy fishing contest can enter fish in one of six categories: largemouth bass, rainbow trout, crappie, catfish, bullhead and bluegill. Prizes will be awarded by weight and limited to one per person. A first- and second-place prize will be awarded in each category.

Chileda canoe race event set for May 10
The second annual Chileda/3RO Canoe/Kayak Race will be held May 10 at Goose Island County Park, south of La Crosse.
The event raises funds for Chileda, a nonprofit school serving students from seven states and approximately 50 students from the La Crosse and Winona area.
The canoe and kayak race is set to start at 11 a.m. People can register for the race at the Three Rivers Outdoors store in downtown La Crosse, online at www.active.com or from 9 to 10 a.m. the day of the event at Goose Island
The canoe/kayak race is a friendly competition between teams of people. The race course will follow the Goose Island Canoe Trail out and back for approximately three miles. The race categories are women, men, mixed for adults, family and youth.
Additional fun and informative activities planned from noon to 3 p.m. include kayak and canoe demonstrations, orienteering/geocaching, camp cooking demonstrations, Nordic walking demonstrations and product displays.
Annual biggest baby shower set for June 8
Franciscan Skemp’s seventh annual Biggest Baby Shower EVER will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 8, in the employee parking ramp on 10th Street between Market and Ferry streets. The shower is co-sponsored by Magic 105.
In addition to informational displays by Franciscan Skemp, participants can shop local vendors, win prizes and enjoy refreshments and children’s activities. Infant car seat checks will be available on a limited basis.
Scorpions coming to Fort McCoy
The Army Concert Tour has announced a new feature act, the Scorpions, to headline a Saturday, Aug. 9, performance at Fort McCoy. Other acts still are being sought. Ticket pricing and more information will follow soon.
The Scorpions, a German hard rock band, are best known for their 1984 anthem “Rock You Like a Hurricane” and the 1990 ballad “Wind of Change.”

Recipes sought for Dairy Days contest
This year’s June Dairy Days Recipe Contest will be held Friday, May 30 at 1:30 p.m. at West Salem Village Hall.
The category this year is “dips and spreads.” Each contestant must bring their entry ready to serve with crackers, chips, etc. After the judging, the dips and spreads will be shared with the audience.
The recipe must contain two or more dairy products; eggs are not counted a dairy product.
Entrants must be La Crosse County residents or members of La Crosse County Association of Home and Community Education.
The entry must be brought to the West Salem Village Hall by 12:45 p.m. on May 30.
The recipe should be typed or written on an 8.5-by-11-inch piece of paper with name, address and phone number in the upper right corner. The recipe must be received by May 16 and sent to: University Extension Office, 400 Fourth St. N., La Crosse, WI 54601.
Recipes become the property of the Dairy Recipe Contest Committee. Contest entrants receive free admission while the cost to others is $2.
First place will win $30, second place will win $25 and third will win $20. Fourth through sixth places will receive $15, $10 and $5, respectively.
