Onalaska High School summer softball pitcher Liz Burritt threw a no-hitter in an 11-1 win in game one of a doubleheader at Viroqua July 9.
Burritt came close to a perfect game, allowing one walk. That runner eventually scored in combination with some of Onalaska's five errors. Burritt sturck out eight.
“She pitched very well,” Onalaska head coach Andi Vogler said. “Her control was excellent, but that wasn't a huge surprise, because it's been good the whole season. She was able to get ground ball outs whenever she needed to get them.”
Vogler said Onalaska made one particularly impressive play to save the no-hitter. On that play, shorstop Tricia Madison was able to get close enough to an apparent hit that a scorer's decision became an issue.
“She's developing more than just a fastball and a change-up,” Vogler said of Burritt. “She's pitching with a ton of confidence right now.”
Burritt helped herself with two hits, including a double to lead off the game. Hailee Schanke added an RBI triple in a four-run second, while Kyla Fredrickson notched two RBI singles.
Onalaska won the nightcap 10-5. Alyssa Snow earned a complete-game win in a contest that was shortened to six innings due to time limit, allowing four hits, two earned runs and four walks against six strikeouts.
Madison's two-run single in the first gave Onalaska the lead for good, though they needed four runs in the seventh to break away from a 6-5 game. Schanke and Alyssa Stauffer each had two hits, and drove in runs.
“I'm pleased with the fact we are scoring right away in the first inning,” Vogler said. “That always puts pressure on the other teams and relieves a little pressure for our pitchers. I think one reason (Burritt and Snow) are both pitching well is because they are getting run support.”
Onalaska followed by going 1-2 in Saturday's DeSoto tournament, including a 9-6, eight-inning win over Luther and a 3-2, eight-inning loss to Aquinas.
Onalaska opened the seventh under intentional tiebreaker rules, but took the lead for good on a Stauffer RBI single and Fredrickson two-run double in the eighth. Luther was retired in order by Burritt in the eighth, allowing the right-hander to earn the win. The hit was the third in the game for Stauffer.
Burritt allowed four hits, one earned run and zero walks against two strikeouts over the final 4 2/3 innings. Snow had three strikeouts and three walks over the first 3 1/3 innings.
Megan Wagner joined Stauffer with three hits, while also driving in two runs. Burritt had two hits, including a double.
Burritt allowed just five hits, one earned run and zero walks against four strikeouts against Aquinas, but it wasn't enough. Onalaska couldn't score despite loading the bases under the international tiebreaker in the top of the eighth. Aquinas scored the winning run on an errant throw.
“This is the best I've seen this team play Aquinas,” Vogler said. “Burritt pitched extremely well, but our defense just couldn't quite hold up behind her. Leaving the bases loaded in the top of the eighth was a big blow to us, but a big motivator for Aquinas.”
Onalaska took the initial lead on a Wagner RBI single in the fourth and retied the game on a Fredrickson RBI double in the fifth. Fredrickson tripled and scored on Wagner's hit, while Burritt doubled and scored on Fredrickson's double. Burritt, Fredrickson. Stauffer, McKenzie Fuller and Lindsey Harrled all had hits in Onalaska's opening 4-3 loss to De Soto.
