Holmen's Bennett Laxton won the boys ages 14-15 division, while Onalaska's Ben Skogen won the boys 12-13 division at the July 9 Sarah Ann Mullenbach Mixed Scramble Three Rivers Golf Association Junior Forest Hills Open.
Laxton paced the 16 boys in his flight with an opening nine of 3-over 38. His second nine of 2-over 38 was eclipsed by Tomah's Derek Moser (37), but it was still plenty to hang on for a 5-over 76 and four-shot margin over Holmen's Jeremy Mason (40-40-80).Onalaska's Ben Socha was fourth in the flight at 12-over 40-43-83. Onalaska's Cole Bjornstad was 12th in the flight at 48-50-98, followed by Holmen's Bryan Pearse at 57-48-105.
Skogen trailed Onalaska resident and Holmen student Joel Preeshl by four shots at the turn after Preeshl's opening nine of 4-over 39. But Skogen tied for the best back side among the 70 players in the tournament at 1-under 35. That was enough to forge a tie with Preeshl at 7-over 78, which Skogen was in a scorecard tiebreak, the top score on the toughest handicap hole, the par-5 6th.
Holmen's Drew Schroeder was third in the flight at 9-over 43-37-80. Onalaska's Jason Havlicek wsa seventh in the flight at 56-49-105, with Onalaska's Zackery Hawkinson ninth at 76-72-148.
Emily Swift, a 2008 Onalaska High School graduate, led the girls 16-18 division by one shot at the turn after a front nine of 8-over 43. Swift, who will play collegiately at UW-Eau Claire this fall, was tied by La Crosse's Sara Mattes and Tomah's Rhianna Nichols at 14-over 85. Swift and Mattes were declared co-champions eclipsing Nichols on No. 6.
Eryn Johnson, a Holmen student and Onalaska resident, was sixth in the flight at 50-46-96, while Holmen's Christa Beranek was ninth in the flight at 51-48-99. Holmen's Bri Wesely was 10th in the flight at 52-50-102.
Onalaska's Carmen Lezpona won the girls 14-15 division at 50-52-102. Lezpona and Winona's Tia Benson was tied at the turn, with Lezpona's back nine good for a one-shot margin.
Onalaska's Ben Smaby was fourth in the boys 16-18 division at 7-over 42-36-78. the only better back-side scores in the event were posted by Skogen and boys 16-18 flight winner Jared Agrimson of Peterson, Minn.
Brandon Temte, a Holmen student and Onalaska resident, was sixth in the flight at 9-over 38-42-80. Onalaska's Kurt Peters was 12th in the flight at 40-44-84. Other players in the flight included Holmen student and Onalaska resident Jared Mullenbach at 43-46-89, Luther High School senior-to-be Mitch Cook at 46-46-92 and Onalaska's Chris Lezpona at 50-49-99.
