Friday will be the last day for Dave’s Barber Shop at 711 Second Ave. S., along Hwy. 35 in Onalaska.

Owner Dave Holthaus, who’s been at his current location since 1988, is retiring after 48 years and seven months as a barber. “There’s not many barbers left, you know,” Holthaus said.

A cosmetologist is buying his building, and plans to remodel it for a two-chair salon, he said.

Holthaus said he will continue to live in Onalaska, and also plans to travel.

" Now what am I gonna do? Pony tails have been out of fashion since the 60's! Guess I'm gonna have to man up and start going to one of those places that puts jelly in your hair. "

" I especially liked your mounted elk head, and NRA stickers on your mirror. "

" I have fond memories of Dave cutting my hair when I was a young boy. My Dad and I getting our haircuts on Saturday mornings together. Onalaska...what a great place to have been raised, it's people like Dave Holthaus that keep communities vital. You will be missed.

I wish you the very best in your retirement. "
