Shawn Scherer threw the first no-hitter in the eight-year history of the Bi-State Bulldogs, Luther High School's Legoin program, in a 10-1 win over Norwalk-Ontario-Wilton Friday.

Scherer allowed faced seven over the minimum, allowing four walks and three hit batsmen. N-O-W scored its run in the second after a hit batsmen and walk, with an errant pickoff attempt going into center, and the ensuing throw to third going into the Bi-State dugout.

Scherer got the benefit of three strong defensive plays. The top play came from third baseman Brad Essig, whose diving stop on a ground ball in the hole in the first didn't seem at the time like it would be that important. The final two more-than-routine plays came in the sixth, with left fielder Mike Schneider making a running catch on a sinking liner along the left-field line, and center fielder Ryan Lussky making a catch in the shadow of the fence.

Scherer, Brad Essig and Matt Essig had three of the bigger hits in the Bulldogs seven-run fourth. Scherer's two-run home run to right-center gave Bi-State a 4-1 lead, while Brad Essig's squeeze bunt drove in Brian Wrobel and Ryan Lussky and gave the Bulldogs a 7-1 advantage. Matt Essig followed two batters later with a two-run double to right-center to push the margin to 9-1.

Ryan Zibrowski also had an extra-base hit for Bi-State, an RBI double to right-center that drove in Matt Essig in the first. Marcus Walters singled and scored in both the fourth and fifth, scoring the second time on a Lussky base hit. Steve Schultz, who caught the no-hitter, drove in Walters and scored on the Matt Essig double in the fourth.

Bi-State completed its regular season on a 10-game winning streak after a 10-2 and 5-3 doubleheader sweep of La Farge Saturday. Lussky earned the win in the opener, allowing four hits and one earned run over the first four innings. Zibrowski earned a pitched-effectively save, allowing two walks against two strikeouts, but nothing else, over the final three innings.

Matt Essig earned the win in the nighcap, allowing one hit and no runs over the first four innings. Walters earned a pitched-effectively save, allowing no earned runs over the final two innings in a game that was shortened to six innings due to darkness.

Walters also had among the bigger hits in the game, including a two-run single in a three-run third that pushed the Bulldogs lead to 8-2. Essig had three hits, including a leadoff single in the first and an RBI double in the fourth. Zibrowski and Lussky had two hits each, including an RBI single from Zibrowski and an RBI double from Lussky in a three-run first.

Schultz singled and scored in a two-run fifth, while Brad Essig singled to lead off a two-run second, before scoring. Schneider added an RBI single to center in the fifth.

Brad Essig had one of the bigger hits in the nightcap, a two-run single to center to cap a four-run first. Matt Essig, Justin Podella, Lussky and Schultz also had hits for Bi-State.

Matt Essig stole two bases, two of six Bulldogs steals. Bi-State was 11-of-11 in steal attempts in the twinbill.

The Bulldogs are in the midst of hosting the local Class A regional. For updates, go to www.frvlegion.com. Saturday's regional games will be played at Luther, beginning at 11 a.m.
