MERRILL, Wis. -- Onalaska survived a seventh-inning scare and won its opening-round game Friday in the Class AA Legion baseball state tournament.

Onalaska allowed eight runs in the bottom of the seventh but escaped with a 10-9 victory over Kaukauna.

The drama was created when Onalaska tried to save the arm of starting pitcher Kyle Stewart. Through the first six innings, Stewart allowed one hit and threw just 65 pitches.

However, after two Onalaska reliev pitchers couldn't contain Kaukauna in the seventh, Stewart came back in. He gave up a three-run home run and a walk but got the final out on a strikeout.

Tyler Adams drove in the what would prove to be the game-winning run for Onalaska in the top of the seventh with a single.

Onalaska faces Beaver Dam at 5 p.m. today.
