Wisconsin veterans wounded in combat will be honored in a ceremony at noon today in Riverside Park.

The event will feature the unveiling of the 2008 Purple Heart stamp and speeches by Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary John Scocos, Logistics Health CEO Don Weber and the commander of the Wisconsin Military Order of the Purple Heart.

There are about 55 members of the La Crosse chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, which covers Western Wisconsin and Northeast Iowa.

In 2001, the Wisconsin Assembly designated Aug. 7 as Purple Heart Day. That was the day in 1782 that George Washington established the award, then known as the Badge of Military Merit.

This is the first year the ceremony has been held in La Crosse.
