Skogen in top five in division at Jr. Boys

Onalaska's Ben Skogen tied for fifth in the boys 14-and-under age divsion at last week's Wisconsin State Golf Association state junior boys championships at Nakoma Golf Club in Madison.

Skogen finishing at 28-over-par 82-80-76 238. Skogen had two birdies and 11 pars in his opening round, along with a combined 17 pars in his first two rounds. Skogen, playing out of Coulee Golf Bowl, was 15 shots behind Charlie Danielson for division honors.

Onalaska's Mark Wittchow finished in the top half of the overall field, but was the lone Onalaska player among nine entrants to do so.

Wittchow tied for 42nd among the 94 players who made the 36-hole cut, finishing with a three-day, 54-hole total of 18-over 73-80-75 228. Wittchow, who will be a senior at Onalaska High School this fall, had two birdies and 12 pars in his opening round, but had just one birdie and two double-bogeys in his second round. Appearing to take some chances, he had an event-best four birdies in his final round, but also an event-high three double-bogeys.

Onalaska's Jason Jorgensen also made the cut. The 2008 OHS graduate and Viterbo University recruit finished at 25-over 80-75-80 235, and had at least five holes of bogey or worse in each round.

Onalaska players faliing to make the cut included Cody Ferguson, Brad Preeshl, Clint Ferguson, Nick Bertram, Ben Socha and Ben Smaby. Cody Ferguson missed the cut by one stroke after a two-day, 36-hole total of 17-over 81-76-157.

Ferguson had a birdie, but just six pars in his opening round. He rebounded with two birdies and 10 pars in his 36-40-76, but it was just short of getting him to a third round.

Preeshl finished at 18-over 79-79-158 .He had a birdie, but just eight pars in his opening round. He had a second birdie, but dropped to just six pars, in his second round.

Clint Ferguson finished at 20-over 78-82-160. He had three birdies and seven pars in his opening round, but did not card a birdie, while making three double-bogeys, in his second round.

Bertram finished at 28-over 82-86-168. He had seven pars in his opening round, along with a birdie and four pars in his second round.

Socha finished at 33-over 86-87-173. He had a birdie and six pars in his opening round, following with four pars in his second round.

Smaby finished at 37-over 91-86-177. He had six pars in his opening round and five pars in his second round.
